MAINE: Hot weather fuels algal blooms in Casco Bay that may be killing soft-shell clams

August 16, 2022 โ€” Three dense and very large algal blooms fueled by extreme heat in recent weeks may have contributed to the deaths of a significant number of soft-shell clams in eastern Casco Bay.

The blooms, which cause a reddish brown or mustard-yellow discoloration of ocean waters, are concentrated in Maquoit Bay off Brunswick and Freeport; in Middle Bay off Brunswick and Harpswell; and in Basin Cove in Harpswell.

The Friends of Casco Bay sounded the alarm about the bloom on Monday, describing it as very concerning. The Maine Department of Marine Resources has also taken notice of the algal bloom, but said it is nontoxic.

โ€œThe blooms are not harmful to people who consume shellfish or swim in the waters, but due to the high cell concentration, anoxic conditions could occur, which may result in limited marine organism mortalities,โ€ the DMR said in a statement.

NORTH CAROLINA: New experiment raises possibility of fresh N.C. soft-shell crabs year-round

March 11, 2019 โ€” An experiment to farm soft-shell crabs in North Carolina ponds could augment declining wild stocks and lead to having plenty of the delicacy fresh almost year round.

Scientists from North Carolina and Mississippi will work together in a three-year venture to raise blue crabs and harvest them for the lucrative soft-shell market.

Fresh soft crabs flood the market typically in May and June, at the height of molting season.

A $339,239 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will fund the project, managed by Sea Grant programs in both states. The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Lab will lead the effort and lend expertise.

Never Frozen: Why Itโ€™s So Hard to Find North Carolina Seafood

August 31, 2016 โ€” JUST BEFORE sunrise in one of the last fishing villages on the Outer Banks, a widow stands at her back window and watches the lights from crab boats head into the bay, one by one. By this hour, she figures, her daughter must be about 150 miles west of here, on her way to Raleigh and Charlotte and Asheville with a load of cobia and Spanish mackerel and soft-shell crabs. Less than a mile away from the widowโ€™s houseโ€” or, put another way, clear across the islandโ€”a woman wearing a mudstained Endurance Seafood T-shirt dives her hands into her familyโ€™s decades-old live boxes to see if any crabs shed their shells overnight. Nearby, her 82-year-old father pulls on his fluorescent yellow slicker.

When you step into the morning darkness on Colington Island, you canโ€™t fake being from here or not from here. Itโ€™s evident in your accent, your look, your last name. On this Friday morning in May, in the middle of soft-shell crab season in the soft-shell crab capital of North Carolina, an outsider opens the door to his Chevy Suburban and slips into the leather seats. Itโ€™s 5:51 a.m., but the promise of a good day for his business hits him as he turns the key.

โ€œAh, yeah,โ€ he says, โ€œthereโ€™s that familiar smell.โ€

Two and a half years ago, Sean Schussler quit a six-figure job as vice president of sales for a printing company to start a seafood market. Catch On Seafood is a small shop in Plaza Midwood, a trendy Charlotte neighborhood where people drive eco-friendly cars with bumper stickers that read โ€œEat Local.โ€
