Scientists push for joint effort to better understand Pacific salmon trends

March 23, 2021 โ€” Forecasting models used to determine stocks and expected landings of Pacific salmon have been rendered obsolete by climate change, and a global effort is needed to update them, a conference of leading marine scientists has concluded.

The conference, โ€œAbundance Dynamics, Stock Status, and Artificial Reproduction of Pacific Salmon in the Northern Pacific,โ€ took place in late February and was initiated by the Russian Federal Agency for Fisheries. Held in both online and offline formats at the Sakhalin branch of the Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), in the Russian city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the event was attended by 500 participants from Russia, the United States, Canada, South Korea, and Japan.

Russia hints it may auction all crab quotas

December 28, 2020 โ€” The Russian government is considering selling the remainder of the countryโ€™s crab quotas via auctions, a follow-up to its controversial decision last year to auction half of its crab-fishing rights.

Russian Federal Agency for Fisheries Head Ilya Shestakov expressed openness when asked in an interview with the business paper Kommersant whether itโ€™s possible that the remaining 50 percent of crab quotas โ€“ currently distributed based on averages of a companyโ€™s previous catch โ€“ could be sold through auctions in the future.

In wake of bad salmon season, Russia calls for new forecasting approach

November 19, 2020 โ€” Russiaโ€™s salmon fisheries experienced the their worst season in 10 years in 2020, and fisheries scientists are placing the blame on weather anomalies and are calling for new approaches to future season forecasts, potentially including new international cooperation.

Through 2 November, Russia had harvested 299,200 metric tons (MT) of salmon, Russiaโ€™s Federal Agency for Fisheries reported. That is the lowest total since 2009, and 44 percent less than the record year in 2018. Fishing in most areas has finished for the year, with just a few thousand MT still to arrive over the next few days.

Russia, Japan and US to Design Joint Solutions to Deal with Reduced Salmon Catch This Year

November 6, 2020 โ€” Russia plans to attract the US and Japan to find a solution of the problem of poor salmon catch this year, according to recent statements, made by the head of the Russian Federal Agency for Fisheries (Rosrybolovstvo) Ilya Shestakov.

According to authorities of the Russian Primorsky Krai, this year the volume of salmon caught in the countryโ€™s territorial waters is significantly lower than initially expected figures for 2020. A spokesman of the Primorye authorities said if last year 297,000 tonnes of salmon were caught in the Far East, this year the volume of catch is by 1.5 times lower than a year ago. The main reason for this is the rise in water temperature and the massive death of salmon from toxins, released by red algae.

Russia to push its newfound advantage on cod

January 31, 2020 โ€” Russiaโ€™s fisheries production continues to climb, reaching an all-time high of 5.03 million metric tons (MT) in 2018 and coming close to that mark again last year with a total catch of nearly five million MT.

But the Russian government thinks the country can do better.
