National Fisheries Institute Statement on the Confirmation of Dr. Robert Califf as FDAโ€™s new Commissioner

February 15, 2022 โ€” The following was released by the National Fisheries Institute:

The National Fisheries Institute welcomes Dr. Robert Califf as the Food and Drug Administrationโ€™s new Commissioner.

Many parts of the seafood value chain have been impacted by the pandemic and associated lockdowns over the course of two years. During that time the FDA has been rightly focused on various scientific aspects of protecting public health and we salute the agency for its work.

We ask Dr. Califf to quickly focus FDAโ€™s food safety resources on challenges that are important to the seafood community. Prompt action on things like proper labeling, standards of identity and economic integrity are of critical significance. A lack of attention to these priorities undermines the importance of  FDAโ€™s vital food focus.

We look forward to working with Dr. Califf.

Murkowski Introduces Updated Legislation to Require Labeling of GE Salmon

March 3, 2016 โ€” The following was released by the Office of Senator Lisa Murkowski:

Today U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) continued her fight against โ€œFrankenfishโ€ by introducing legislation to mandate labeling of genetically engineered (GE) salmon. The Genetically Engineered Salmon Labeling Act, co-sponsored by Senators Dan Sullivan (R-AK) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA), changes the acceptable market name for any salmon that is genetically engineered to include the words โ€œgenetically engineeredโ€ or โ€œGE.โ€ The bill also requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to ensure a third-party scientific review of the FDAโ€™s environmental assessment of AquaAdvantage salmon, focusing in particular on the effects that GE salmon could have upon wild stocks and ecosystems. Congressman Don Young (R-AK) introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives.

โ€œWe have had success in in the fight against Frankenfish, but I wonโ€™t let up until it is mandatory to make clear to consumers whether they are purchasing Frankenfish or the wild, healthy, sustainably-caught, delicious real thing,โ€ said Murkowski. โ€œI still adamantly oppose the FDAโ€™s approval of GE salmon, for the health of both consumers and fisheries. But at least with this legislation, Alaskans and consumers across the rest of the country wonโ€™t be deceived and will be aware of what it is they are seeing on store shelves.โ€

Background:

  • November 2015: In response to the FDAโ€™s decision to approve GE salmon for human consumption, Murkowski announced that she would block the confirmation of Dr. Robert Califf to be FDA Commissioner until her concerns regarding labeling guidelines for GE salmon had been resolved.
  • December 2015: Murkowski successfully inserted a provision in the omnibus bill that blocks the FDA from introducing GE salmon into the market until it publishes labeling guidelines so consumers are aware of what is contained in the product they are purchasing.
  • January 2016: Murkowski officially placed a hold on Dr. Califfโ€™s confirmation after he advanced out of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.
  • January 2016: In direct response to Senator Murkowskiโ€™s efforts, the FDA announced an import ban on GE salmon until labeling guidelines had been published.
  • February 2016: The FDA provided Senator Murkowski with technical drafting assistance on legislative language that would effectively mandate labeling of GE salmon, and in response Senator Murkowski lifted her hold on Dr. Califfโ€™s nomination.

Operators Gear Up to Present Innovative, Flavorful Fried Fish During Lent

SEAFOODNEWS.COM by Michael Ramsingh โ€” January 13, 2016 โ€” Foodservice operators will infuse more flavor into the traditional fried fish staples during this yearโ€™s Lenten season. Fish dishes are expected to feature more Mediterranean, Asian, Middle Eastern and Mexican concepts and flavors. โ€œFish is the perfect canvas for any flavor, โ€ says Arlene Spiegel, of Arlene Spiegel & Associates, a restaurant consulting company in New York. โ€œAnd people love fried food. A fried fish sandwich or fish and chips can be stellar. And it shouldnโ€™t be just for Lent. It can be promoted all year round. It can be something important.โ€

Ocean Choice International said they are pleased with the decision by the Supreme Court of Newfoundland that dismissed a challenge to the company from Landvis Canada, the minority partner owned by an Icelandic Fishing Firm. Landvis sought to oust Martin and Blaine Sullivan, the two brothers who control the company. โ€œIt was a clear and unambiguous decision and we are very pleased that Justice Orsborn completely accepted our position,โ€ said Martin Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer with OCI.

In other news the PEI Fishermenโ€™s Association (PEIFA) wants changes made to the temporary foreign workers program to allow seafood processing plants to hire more workers. โ€œIt gets back to being able to process all the product thatโ€™s coming in. Weโ€™ve got a short term strategy, let us adopt it and weโ€™ll work towards a bigger longer-term solution,โ€ said PEIFA Executive Director Ian MacPherson.

Meanwhile, Ecuador and Peru are reporting lower mahi catches since the season began in Mid-November. It appears El Nino may be impacting mahi landings since warmer waters have increased the supply of bait fish. โ€œOne of the effects of El Niรฑo is a bountiful supply of natural prey which the mahi are inclined to eat. Because of this they are preferentially feeding on natural bait and are less inclined to feed on fishing bait, resulting in lower catches,โ€ said Jeff Azari, at Pacific Coral.

Finally, Alaskan Senator Lisa Murkowski said she would stall the final vote approving Dr. Robert Califf as the next FDA Commissioner if she does not get assurances that mandatory labeling laws will be written for genetically modified salmon. โ€œI want to make sure, be very, very certain, that when we are talking about these genetically engineered fish for human consumption, voluntary labeling is not adequate,โ€ said Sen. Murkowski.

FDA nominee sails through Senate committee, but could a fish stand in his way?

January 12, 2016 โ€” A Senate health committee on Tuesday easily advanced the nomination of former Duke University researcher and cardiologist Robert Califf as the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. But Califf, while widely expected to win confirmation from the full Senate, faces at least one surprise hurdle on the way to his new job: genetically engineered salmon.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) told her colleagues on the committee that met Tuesday to vote on Califfโ€™s nomination that she is willing to stall it until he and FDA agree to mandatory labeling requirements for the AquaAdvantage salmon.

The salmon, produced by Massachusetts-based AquaBounty and approved by the agency in November, is an Atlantic salmon that contains a growth hormone from a Chinook salmon and has been given a gene from the ocean pout, an eel-like fish. The result is a fish engineered to grow twice as fast as its natural counterpart. The first genetically altered animal approved for human consumption, it has been the subject of long-running fights involving food-safety activists, environmental groups and the salmon fishing industry.
