CALIFORNIA: Fishermen at Pillar Point hold fast for better days

February 28, 2023 — Delays in the season, half gear restrictions and low prices from a flooded market are some of the biggest concerns of the crabbing season from the fishermen out of Pillar Point Harbor.

Captain Mike Burian, who fishes under the vessel, Prime Time out of Pillar Point Harbor, bought a boat last year when it sounded like a good deal; however, his dream of running a profitable crabbing and salmon boat quickly turned into a nightmare after multiple delays in the season and various obstacles made it increasingly difficult to turn a profit.

“I always wanted to do this and someone was selling the vessel, pods and permits and I thought it was a good idea at the time,” Burian said. “If I did well, I was going to do it full time and fish for salmon as well; but, at this time, there is no way to make a living with this as far as I can see.”

The storm only made things more difficult because the high winds and waves buried some of the crab in the pots, suffocating and killing some of the crustaceans, he added.

“It’s a nightmare. I did not plan on this at all when I purchased the vessel, but if I don’t sell it I will be forced to do it again next year,” Burian said.

Whale show returns to California’s coast, and it’s amazing

April 14, 2017 — Whale breath smells like fermented Brussels sprouts.

When you’re on the sea and pick up a whiff of that unmistakable aroma, even if only for a moment, it can feel like a 110-volt jolt.

It can mean only one thing: They’re close … real close.

For a few seconds one spring day out of Pillar Point Harbor near Half Moon Bay, that smell filled the air around us. We were in a Zodiac inflatable in 60 feet of water off Moss Beach. My fishing partner, Jim McDaniel, turned to me and said, “Do you smell that?”

Before I could answer, a gray whale emerged 30 feet from us, its back jutting through the surface, and then let loose from its blow hole. With a loud whoosh, a misty stream of water rocketed into the air.

The shock of the whale so close — it felt as if he could have capsized us — probably cleared all the cholesterol out of our bloodstreams.

Right on schedule, the whales are back, same time, same place.

Crab season: Fishermen scrambling to pay bills

November 16, 2015 — This was supposed to be the winter Braeden Breton finally realized his dream of running his own crab fishing boat. After putting down $7,500 in April toward a commercial permit, he was counting on earning enough money as a deckhand this fall to pay off the rest and begin setting his own traps after the new year.

Now the indefinite postponement of the commercial Dungeness crab season has thrown that plan into disarray. Like hundreds of other fishermen in the Bay Area, Breton finds himself scrambling to pay the bills.

Breton, of El Granada, and a partner must make monthly payments on the $20,000 they still owe for the permit. He may head north this month in the hope of finding work on a boat in Oregon, where the Dungeness crab season is tentatively slated to open Dec. 1 on the northern half of the coast.

“It’s hard on everyone around me, and it’s hard on me as well,” Breton, 23, said of the delay. “I have to keep up with my payments or I’ll lose my permit.”

More than a week after the California Department of Fish and Wildlife shut down the commercial season because of high levels of neurotoxins in the crab, the outlook for California fishermen is as murky as the ocean depths where the prized crustaceans scuttle and scavenge.
