ALASKA: Copper River salmon harvest set to begin May 17

May 17, 2021 โ€” Alaskaโ€™s 2021 salmon officially starts on Monday, May 17 with a 12-hour opener for reds and kings at the Copper River.

All eyes will be on early Cordova dock prices for Alaskaโ€™s famous โ€œfirst fresh salmon of the seasonโ€ as an indicator of wild salmon markets. COVID-forced closures in 2020 of high-end restaurants and seafood outlets tanked starting prices to $3 per pound for sockeyes and $6.50 for king salmon, down from $10 and $14, respectively the previous year.

But early signs are looking good.

Heading into Motherโ€™s Day on May 9, demand for seafood was โ€œfanaticโ€ said Mitch Miller, vice president of national upscale seafood restaurants Ocean Prime in Nationโ€™s Restaurant News.

National Retail Federation President Matthew Shay said there is a lot more consumer optimism this year as more people are getting vaccinated and stimulus checks are being distributed, and friends and family are moving about more freely.

Alaskaโ€™s 2021 salmon harvest is projected to top 190 million fish, a 61% increase over the 2020 catch. The breakdown includes 46.6 million sockeye salmon, 3.8 million cohos, 15.3 million chum salmon, 296,000 Chinook and 124.2 million pinks.

National Fisheries Institute joins US business-backed campaign against tariffs

September 13, 2018 โ€” The National Fisheries Institute has joined around 80 other U.S. trade associations in a coordinated campaign to oppose tariffs and other barriers to free trade.

The multi-industry coalition, Americans for Free Trade, on Wedneday, 12 September, launched a multi-million dollar national campaign titled Tariffs Hurt the Heartland. The campaign is aimed at members of the U.S. Congress and the general public and will tell stories of American businesses, farmers, workers, and families being hurt by the recently imposed tariffs. It will include events in congressional districts across the country; paid television, radio, and online advertisements; a โ€œrapid-response war roomโ€ that will fact check and respond to tariff announcements; a digital and traditional media campaign including op-eds, blogs, and press statements on tariff-related issues; and direct outreach to key members of Congress โ€œon behalf of grassroots voices from across the nation,โ€ according to the newly-formed organization.

โ€œAmerican jobs are fueled by international trade in seafood,โ€ NFI President John Connelly said in a press release. โ€œWithout access to seafood imports from important markets like China, or if these products become too expensive, jobs here in the U.S. will pay the price.โ€

Partners in the campaign include the National Retail Federation, Farmers for Free Trade, Retail Industry Leaders, the Consumer Technology Association, the American Apparel and Footwear Association, and the National Marine Manufacturers Association. A full list of participating organizations can be seen at the campaignโ€™s website, AmericansforFreeTrade.com.
