October 23, 2020 โ In just the past two weeks, two separate North Atlantic right whales have been discovered tangled in fishing gear off the U.S. East Coast.
The whales, which are one of the most endangered species on the planet โ with only 400 estimated to be left โ were spotted on 11 October and 19 October. Both whales were badly entangled when spotted, to the point that without intervention, death is likely, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
January 2, 2018 โ YARMOUTH PORT, Mass. โ A harbor seal pup seemed to have her heart set on an anchovy pizza when she wandered a couple of miles inland Friday night and wound up in the parking lot of Yarmouth Pizza by Evan.
Brian Sharpe, manager of Marine Mammal Rescue and Research for the International Fund for Animal Welfare in Yarmouth Port, said it appeared the 6-month-old pup had followed winding Whiteโs Creek inland from Grays Beach through a marsh and crossed Route 6A near Weir Road where the creek goes under the road.
โThis does happen, especially with the younger ones,โ said Sharpe. He and a veterinarian from IFAW responded to the pizza shopโs parking lot where the 3-foot-long, 40-pound seal had been placed into a box, then transferred to a pet crate by passerby who were concerned the animal would cross Route 6A again and get hit by a vehicle.
Although they were well-intentioned, Sharpe cautioned the public against approaching or handling marine mammals. The National Marine Fisheries Service guidelines ask people to remain at least 150 feet from seals.

September 11, 2015 โ NOAA Fisheries announced Thursday its annual award of $2.75 million in grants to organizations that respond to and rehabilitate stranded marine mammals and collect data on their health. Two organizations in Massachusetts โ both of them on Cape Codโ received grants: the International Fund for Animal Welfare in Yarmouth Port and the National Marine Life Center in Buzzards Bay.โจThe John H. Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Grant Program provides aid to organizations, academic institutions and state agencies in in 16 states that are members of the National Marine Mammal Stranding Network. The grants fund recovery and treatment of stranded marine mammals, data collection from living or dead stranded marine mammals and facility upgrades, operational costs and staffing related to those activities.
IFAW received a grant of $97,542 for pinniped entanglement investigation and response in the northeastern United States. The National Marine Life Center received $51,734 to continue a marine mammal parasite lab and $70,041 to support pinniped rehabilitation in northern New England, and enhance data collection and preparedness for emergency events.โจ Pinnipeds include seals, sea lions and walruses.
