US seafood suppliers, organizations forge ahead with Boston plans

March 13, 2020 โ€” The Global Aquaculture Alliance and other companies and nonprofits involved in the seafood industry have rescheduled events originally planned for Seafood Expo North America to online meetings and webinars.

The GAA Stakeholder Update Meeting will take place as a webinar on 19 March at 11 a.m. EST. GAA board and committee meetings, which are closed to the public, will also be held online.

Best Aquaculture Practices certifications up 15 percent in 2019

March 2, 2020 โ€” The Global Aquaculture Allianceโ€™s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification program continued to grow in 2019, with 2,681 BAP-certified processing plants, farms, hatcheries and feed mills worldwide by the end of the year. Thatโ€™s up almost 15 percent from the programโ€™s 2018 count, according to the GAAโ€™s annual report.

Created by the GAA in 2008, BAP has the mission of providing quantitative guidelines for evaluations of best practices in aquaculture.

GAA grants coronavirus-related extensions to Chinese facilities seeking BAP certification

February 20, 2020 โ€” The Global Aquaculture Alliance, which operates the Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification, has announced an extension period for Chinese seafood companies in the process of applying for BAP certification.

A statement from GAA Communications Manager Steven Hedlund said the extension was granted as a result of the outbreak of the 2019-nCoV coronavirus, which has disrupted business in China.

โ€œWild vs. farmedโ€ debate hurts seafood sales, GAA panel agrees

February 11, 2020 โ€” With both aquaculture standards and fisheries management practices improving steadily, panelists at a roundtable discussion hosted by the Global Aquaculture Alliance said it is time for the seafood industry to call a cease-fire in the โ€œwild versus farmedโ€ debate and launch a joint effort to increase U.S. seafood consumption across the board.

The debate, titled โ€œCome Together: Uniting the Wild and Farmed Seafood Sectors,โ€ focused on how the U.S. seafood industry help land more seafood onto American dinner plates.

Challenges in Southeast Asiaโ€™s fisheries addressed by IFFO, GAA, and SFP in new reports

November 22, 2019 โ€” The Marine Ingredients Organization (IFFO) and the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) have released a full report on Southeast Asian fisheries, containing data not previously released.

In 2017, IFFO and GAA commissioned a study highlighting Southeast Asian fisheries and their fishmeal relevance, producing a final report that was delivered to Fish Matterโ€™s Duncan Leadbitter and published recently. The initial report championed โ€œa requirement for accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date information as being of prime importance to the management of the sustainability of the aquaculture supply chain,โ€ IFFO explained in a press release. Ultimately, the report concluded that โ€œan integrated approach, based on the concept of collaborationโ€ was the best route to positive impact.

Sustainability gaining ground in Chinese market

November 6, 2019 โ€” Among the sea of Chinese companies exhibiting a huge variety of species and equipment at the China Seafood Expo in Qingdao, China, one thing was in greater abundance in 2019 than ever before: Displays showcasing products certified to a sustainability scheme.

Certifications โ€“ like that of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or the Global Aquaculture Allianceโ€™s Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification โ€“ have been catching on in the worldโ€™s most populous country, with multiple China-based companies now holding a certification of some kind. The number of products, too, showcasing certifications has increased rapidly.

Calls mount for salmon producers to step up to meet Chinaโ€™s growing appetite

October 29, 2019 โ€” Chinaโ€™s exponentially increasing demand for salmon is likely to put a pinch on global supplies if the salmon-farming sector doesnโ€™t find a way to increase production, according to Miguel Ugarte, the Asia sales director for Multiexport Foods Company, a leading supplier of Chilean salmon in China.

China has become the fastest-growing market for salmon in the world, with numbers indicating it has grown a whopping 166 percent in the last eight years, Urgarte said during the Global Aquaculture Allianceโ€™s annual marketplace forum in Qingdao, China on Monday, 28 October.

Latest SOLI workshop offers a sneak peak into the programโ€™s future

October 22, 2019 โ€” Climate change represents one of the biggest threats to the success of the seafood industry, but the complexity of its impact on fisheries is a difficult concept to grasp without a formal education on the subject. The Sustainable Oceans Leadership Institute (SOLI) hopes to change that.

Kicking off in 2020, the SOLI program aims to give attendees access to scientists and local stakeholders across the globe to learn more about what affects climate change is having on their communities and way of life.

GOAL 2019 keynotes to address antibiotic use, social responsibility, and more

August 15, 2019 โ€” The Global Aquaculture Allianceโ€™s GOAL 2019 conference, taking place in Chennai, India, from 21 to 24 October, will feature a variety of leading voices within the global aquaculture industry, including Ramanan Laxminarayan, Darian McBain, and Fabrice DeClerck.

Laxminarayan, the founder and director of the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics, and Policy in Washington, D.C., U.S.A.; McBain, the director of corporate affairs and sustainability for the Thai Union Group; and DeClerck, the co-author of the influential EAT-Lancet Commission report โ€œFood. Planet. Health.โ€, will address three major challenges currently facing aquaculture during their keynote address, GAA said.

Aquaculture Innovation Challenge names five finalists

June 4, 2019 โ€” The 2019 Aquaculture Innovation Challenge, a competition designed to encourage innovation in Indonesiaโ€™s shrimp aquaculture sector, has named five finalists, with a winner to be chosen on 28 June.

All five finalists will receive mentoring from business coaches from representatives of the business, financial, and scientific sectors. The winner will be awarded USD 50,000 (EUR 43,400) and admission to Hatch Blueโ€™s three-month aquaculture accelerator program, and given access to the business incubatorโ€™s global network of industry professionals and investors, adding up to a cash and in-kind prize worth USD 100,000 (EUR 86,800), in exchange for a small equity stake.

The contest is organized by the Seafood Trade Intelligence Portal (STIP), Solidaridad Network, Fresh Studio, and Bogor Agricultural University, with support provided by the Global Aquaculture Alliance, Hatch Blue, and The Walton Family Foundation.

โ€œItโ€™s great for the AIC to support the Indonesian shrimp industry to become more sustainable, through the support of these promising innovations, an additional success to see several Indonesia-based innovations reach the finals. They are a part of the Indonesian shrimp industry, which this rendition of the AIC aims to support,โ€ STIP Operational Manager Sander Visch said.
