MASSACHUSETTS: Commercial striped bass season opens this week

June 23, 2020 โ€” Fishermen should be prepared to see an armada of boats descend on our best striped bass fishing concentration points this week, possibly through much of July. Commercial striper fishermen will begin their intense harvesting season on June 24 โ€” this Wednesday.

The first days of the frenetic, highly competitive season usually bring the very highest prices โ€” and some of the lowest thoughtful behavior. With the lure of a thousand dollars for a dayโ€™s work, motivation can be powerful. If the initial supply is high, though, rewards can plummet fast. Too much early success by too many fishermen hurts their final bottom line.

Whole, gutted wild striped bass averaging 11 pounds right now are retailing at New Yorkโ€™s Fulton Fish Market for $213.18 per fish. Thatโ€™s about $19.38 per pound and includes bones and head. Fillets are selling for about $29.99a pound What Massachusetts fishermen will get this year is anyoneโ€™s guess, but it likely wonโ€™t be stable or fair.

I remember lamenting back in 2014 that while the retail price of striped bass in the market was anywhere from $17 to $26 per pound, fishermen were getting only $4 to $5 a pound. Added to the challenge this year is the presence of seals stealing hooked fish off a line and great white sharks chomping off all but the heads.

Commercial fishing days starting this week will be limited to Mondays and Wednesdays until the stateโ€™s quota of 735,240 pounds is reached. Thatโ€™s a huge toll on a species that has been in decline for at least the last five years. Commercial fishermen bring their fish to buyers the same day they catch them, so those wholesalers can immediately report our stateโ€™s catch. Seafood lovers should expect stripers at their favorite markets and restaurants this week.

Massachusetts: Battling Ice On A New Bedford Fishing Boat

January 3, 2018 โ€” The normally bustling docks along New Bedford harbor were practically deserted Tuesday as an arctic cold front kept some boats off the water.

On one pier, a deckhand heaved a sledge hammer against the ice-caked roof of the Gabby G, a fishing boat on the New Bedford pier. Ice covered practically every exposed surface of this 105-foot dragger.

The boatโ€™s captain, Mario Gonsalves, said he wanted to get another run in before a snow storm thatโ€™s predicted to hit Thursday.  But first, the crew had to de-ice the boat.

โ€œYouโ€™re seeing a lot of ice build-up from spray from the ocean,โ€™โ€™ he said. โ€œThe boat goes up and down and the spray from the wavesโ€ฆjust freeze(s) instantly, almost. This is what happens when you fish and itโ€™s really cold out.โ€™โ€™

Gonsalves and his five-member crew fish for squid and whiting, also known as Silver Hake. Once they catch the fish they store them in boxes with packing ice โ€“ not to keep the fish cold, he said, but to stop them from freezing.

Artist Celebrates Seaportโ€™s Fulton Fish Market 10 Years After Closing

SOUTH STREET SEAPORT, N.Y. โ€” December 22, 2105 โ€” A decade after the Fulton Fish Market shut down its longtime home in the South Street Seaport, artist Naima Rauam said sheโ€™s still โ€œtransfixedโ€™ by the memories of its bustle and charming grit.

โ€œThe light, the activity, the hard work โ€” it was all so captivating,โ€ said Rauam, 69. โ€œI could paint the fish market forever.โ€

From memories, photos and old sketches, Rauam continues to paint colorful scenes of the long-shuttered market from her seaport studio.

A collection of some of her latest watercolors, along with older works and variety of prints, are now on display in a new exhibit titled, โ€œ10th Anniversary, Remembering Fulton Fish Market.โ€
