February 17, 2022 โ The U.S. Department of Agriculture granted $1.9 million to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission to help seafood processors cover costs incurred to prevent exposure to COVID-19.
Processing facilities and owners of processing vessels can apply to the commission for funds.
โOur fisheries and aquaculture industries have endured intense economic hardships since the beginning of COVID-19,โ said Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Virginia Beach, in announcing the grant.
May 14, 2020 โ On Wednesday, Congresswoman Elaine Luria released a letter written to Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross outlining the need for nearly $10 million in relief for Virginiaโs fisheries and complete transparency with NOAAโs recent funding distribution.
The CARES Act, Section 12005 directs the Department of Commerce to distribute $300 million to the seafood and fishery industry businesses that have been negatively impacted by the pandemic.
NOAA released its plan last week for distributing these funds throughout each state, of which $4,520,475 is slated to go to Virginia fisheries, which is about 1.5% of the total allocation.
โIt is unacceptable that NOAAโs allocation decision does not reflect the dramatic losses Virginia watermen have faced as a result of this pandemic and does not accurately calculate the contribution of Virginiaโs fisheries industries to the national seafood industry,โ said Luria. โI urge NOAA to immediately revise its allocation formula to provide Virginia at least $10 million in CARES Act fisheries funding.โ
February 12, 2019 โ In the latest effort to remove Virginia from offshore drilling plans, the stateโs Democratic representatives in Congress are pushing federal officials to revoke seismic testing permits that include the waters off Hampton Roads.
In a letter sent Tuesday to the heads of the departments of Commerce and the Interior, the Virginia delegation said the Trump administrationโs draft five-year energy plan โruns counter to the explicit wishes of coastal communities up and down the Atlantic that would be at risk from offshore drilling and exploration.โ
The appeal was spearheaded by U.S. Rep. A. Donald McEachin of the 4th district, but the nine signatories include Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine and Hampton Roads Congress members Robert C. โBobbyโ Scott, 3rd district, and Elaine G. Luria, 2nd district.
The letter calls on the administration to rescind five Incidental Harassment Authorization permits issued last November by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and to remove Virginiaโs offshore area from the presidentโs controversial 2019-2024 offshore energy plan.
With IHA permits, energy companies can conduct seismic surveys to see where and how much oil and gas is buried in the seabed.
