Planet Tracker: Inflationary economy provides incentives to adopt traceability systems

February 3, 2022 โ€” High inflation and low-cost credit are providing an โ€œappealing windowโ€ for seafood firms to integrate a traceability system into their operations, according to a new Planet Tracker report.

The nonprofitโ€™s new research paper, โ€œImplementing Traceability: Seeing Through Excuses,โ€ said companies โ€œwho have to borrow to fund a traceability system will know that corporate debt rates remain low.โ€

Higher seafood prices could impact Thanksgiving spending

November 23, 2021 โ€” A new survey shows that inflation that is sending seafood prices higher may discourage Americans from indulging during the Thanksgiving holiday.

The price of meats, poultry, fish, and eggs increased 11.9 percent in October, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statisticsโ€™ Consumer Price Index. As a result, 78 percent of consumers say rising prices will impact their Thanksgiving grocery shopping, and 37 percent expect higher costs to have a significant impact on their food spending, according to new survey data from Numerator. Fourteen percent of shoppers said they will not purchase turkey for Thanksgiving this year, while 16 percent said they will omit meat and seafood. And 21 percent said they will reduce the size of their Thanksgiving gathering this year due to rising prices.

US outlook for retail seafood sales strong, despite consumer pricing concerns

September 7, 2021 โ€” A new survey of U.S. consumers is showing some pushback on the recent increase in seafood prices.

Food prices continue to rise across most categories, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statisticsโ€™ Consumer Price Index and several recent consumer surveys. The U.S. consumer price index soared 5.4 percent in July 2021, compared to July 2020, and 95 percent of consumers noticed an increase in retail prices over the past month, according to data firm Numerator.
