British and French talks to settle fishing row end in stalemate

November 5, 2021 โ€” Talks between the British and French governments to settle a post-Brexit fishing row have ended in stalemate as No 10 said it did not believe Paris would follow through on threats to slow down trade.

The Brexit minister, David Frost, spent about 90 minutes meeting Franceโ€™s Europe minister, Clรฉment Beaune, in Paris on Thursday, but despite smiles for the cameras the two sides remained far apart.

Boris Johnsonโ€™s spokesperson said: โ€œWe donโ€™t believe the French are planning to move forward with the previous threats theyโ€™ve made.โ€ Beaune, however, said France wanted to give dialogue a chance, but โ€œthe option for retaliatory measures remains openโ€.

France and Britain are at odds over the rights of French fishers in the six to 12-mile zone around the UK shore, and Jersey and Guernsey. The dispute threatened to tip into a full-blown trade war until the French president, Emmanuel Macron, called for more talks on Monday, holding back on a threat to slow down British imports coming into France.

France, UK escalate fight over post-Brexit fishing access

May 6, 2021 โ€” The row between the United Kingdom and France over post-Brexit fishing rights continues to escalate.

On Thursday, 6 May, dozens of French fishing boats set off for Saint Helier, the main port of Jersey, a British Crown dependency, threatening to mount a blockade. In response, the U.K. sent two Royal Navy gunboats to keep watch. Fishing crews set off flares, sounded their horns and displayed banners. The two sides currently remain in a stand-off, and thus far, the protest has remained peaceful.

France will not โ€˜sacrificeโ€™ its fishermen in any Brexit deal, says minister

December 8, 2020 โ€” Negotiations between Britain and the European Union over a post-Brexit trade deal are complex and France will oppose any pact that โ€œsacrificesโ€ its fishermen, French European Affairs Minister Clement Beaune said on Tuesday.

โ€œOn fisheries there is no reason to yield to Britainโ€™s pressure. We can make some efforts but sacrificing fisheries and fishermen, no,โ€ Beaune told RMC radio, reiterating that France would veto any agreement it considered a โ€œbadโ€ deal.

Since Britain left the European Union in January, each side has urged the other to make concessions to unlock a trade deal before Britainโ€™s transition period for leaving the bloc ends on Dec. 31.
