June 24, 2021 — Local commercial fishermen and others may access a regularly updated list of federal fishing regulations through a new app.
The South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council, an interstate fishery management agency with jurisdiction in the federal waters off of the south Atlantic states, including North Carolina, announced May 25 federal commercial fishing regulations in the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic are now available on the free Fish Rules Commercial mobile app.

Spring fishing season is underway! If you plan to head offshore, fishermen are reminded that beginning May 1st each year there are a few more species to target in South Atlantic federal waters (greater than 3 nautical miles off the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and the east coast of Florida).
May 1st marks the beginning of the shallow-water grouper season, following the annual spawning season closure from January 1st through April 30th. The one exception is the Red Grouper season in federal waters off the coasts of North Carolina and South Carolina, which will open for harvest on June 1st.
Regulations also change for Greater Amberjack, Snowy Grouper, Hogfish and several other species.

June 2, 2020 — The following was released by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council:
Members of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council will hold their quarterly meeting June 8-11, 2020 via webinar.
The meeting week begins on Monday, June 8th at 10:30 a.m. with a series of committee meetings and concludes with a meeting of the Full Council on Thursday, June 11.
Meeting briefing book materials, including committee agendas and overviews, discussion documents, and presentations are available at: https://safmc.net/june-2020-council-meeting-details/. An online comment form is also available for written comments.
The meeting will be available to the public via webinar each day as it occurs. Registration is required and can be completed in advance by visiting the website at the above link.
A formal public comment session will be held on Wednesday, June 10th beginning at 4:00 PM. Details on how to sign up for public comment are available from the meeting page of the website.

December 14, 2017 — CHARLESTON, S.C. — The following was released by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council:
Keeping up with offshore fishing regulations can be a challenge. Many fishermen have taken advantage of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council-sponsored South Atlantic Fishing Regulations mobile application over the past few years. The free app has provided regulation information for both recreational and commercial fishermen fishing in federal waters (ranging from 3 to 200 nautical miles) off the South Atlantic Coast.
As of January 1, 2018, the Council will begin using the Fish Rulesmobile app to keep fishermen updated on federal fishing regulations in the South Atlantic. Fish Rules offers a platform for new features, is user friendly, and has a fast-growing user base along the entire East coast. It also hosts state fishing regulations for those anglers fishing in state waters. For now, the Fish Rules mobile app provides regulation information for recreational regulations. Work is underway with the app developers to also provide commercial regulations in the future.
In order to keep stakeholders accurately informed during the transition, users of the current SA Fishing Regulations mobile app are asked to begin moving to Fish Rules. Both mobile applications will be updated until January 1, 2018, when regulation information will transition completely to Fish Rules.
