September 18, 2014 — Funky-colored lobsters. Fishermen along Maine’s coast seem to be bringing in a lot more of the eye-catching crustaceans.
One scholar says the change in trend is not in the species or environment, but in the attention.
“I think we’ve been finding them all along, but were noticing them more broadly and publicizing their discovery more broadly,” explains Helen Hess, a faculty member at College of the Atlantic. “I think in the advent of social media, a broader audience finding out about colored lobster is definitely possible.”
New or old aside, these shellfish beg many questions – like, why is that lobster blue?
