So far, the focus of the press and the public regarding the regulation of the fishing industry has been on the questionable implementation practices of the Magnuson Act.
The alleged practices are unacceptable. However, redressing injustices will at best be a stopgap measure. If we want to obtain just and lasting results, the focus has to shift to the scientific basis on which the Magnuson Act is built.
The focus has to shift away from science backed by ideology and move toward a science based on facts. The focus has to shift from a linear to an organic conception of the fish food chain.
