March 16, 2012 – Faulty fish stock estimates from the federal government permitted Georges Bank fishermen to catch twice the amount of cod than what is considered sustainable, according to a new report released Thursday.
Updates to projections from 2008 showed that scientists were far too optimistic in estimating the population of Georges Bank cod and some other bottom-feeding stocks, known collectively as groundfish.
The latest population stock assessment, released by the National Marine Fisheries Service, incorporated new information, such as commercial and recreational landings, and data from three new research cruises.
