While the flood waters of the Mississippi River are affecting many of our river communities like Vicksburg and Natchez, in South Mississippi we may also feel an impact. That's because the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway to help protect the levy system near New Orleans, will also most likely push fresh water into the Mississippi Sound.
Our seafood industry will probably take it on the chin again this year because too much fresh water will destroy our oyster beds and adversely affect our young shrimp and crabs in our marshes. In addition, our recreational fishermen who have been reporting great catches this spring may lose some of their favorite fishing holes.
