June 28, 2012 – And the first recipient of the John K. Bullard Diversity Award is … John K. Bullard.
On Monday, Bullard received the inaugural award named in his honor for his "leadership and commitment to making the Woods Hole scientific community welcoming and inclusive," according to a press release issued by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center Wednesday.
The leaders of six scientific organizations headquartered in Woods Hole were meeting to sign an agreement renewing a commitment to building a diverse community when the surprise award was made.
Bullard is the outgoing president of the Sea Education Association, one of the organizations represented. The others are the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, the Coastal and Marine Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Woods Hole Research Center.
Bullard, a former New Bedford mayor, was recognized for his role in forming the Woods Hole Diversity Initiative.
