(SEAFOOD.COM NEWS) March 1, 2013 — A day long fisheries science symposium bringing together scientists including Arni Mathiesen, FAO, Dr. Ray Hilborn, Univ of Washington, Dr. Brian Rothschild, U. Mass, and Dr. George Rose, Memorial Univ, Newfoundland will be held on Friday March 8th in the World Trade Center Amphitheater, next to the Boston Fish Pier.
The Boston Fisheries Founatation has joined Ocean Trust as a sponsor of the program, and is making it possible for members of the industry and interested public to attend at no charge.
A New England Sustainable Seafood Reception will be held Friday evening, March 8th at the Boston World Trade Center. BFF together with Ocean Trust are inviting members of the New England Seafood Industry to the Friday Forum and Reception as guests. However, all attendees must register for the Forum in advance. The Thursday afternoon workshop (separate registration required (link)) will focus on a new sustainability program that assesses fishery management systems rather than individual fisheries, alternatives to overfishing targets used in fisheries management, the role of climate and environmental change in stock fluctuations, and the New England cod situation.
The Friday Forum will include presentations from FAO and Dr. Ray Hilborn on global fishery trends as well as presentations from top scientists on overfishing; impacts of climate change on fisheries; red listed fisheries; New England fisheries and other regional fisheries covering the Americas, deep ocean stocks, and the developing world.
