July 21, 2013 — The Bay State's top shark hunter is raising the red flag saying more Great Whites need to be tagged to better understand the elusive predators who have made Cape Cod their new home.
Greg Skomal, the state Division of Marine Fisheries shark scientist, has only been able to tag 34 great whites — but he's aiming for 100.
The objective of this study is to learn where does the white shark go and what does it do," Skomal said as he worked this weekend's Monster Shark Derby off Martha's Vinyard.
Six great whites were spotted off the coast of Chatham this week, part of a growing migration of the big beasts circiling Cape waters in search of seals.
In order to tag them, Skomal has sought contributions from the Discovery Channelin return for footage used on the popular Shark Week shows. But he's after more funding.
