A dead 6-foot cetacean — either a dolphin or a porpoise — was found washed ashore Monday, Oct 12, on the beach at Demarest Lloyd State Park.
Jane Hoppe, a stranding technician with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Marine Mammal Rescue and Research, located in Yarmouth Port, said her organization is unsure at this point whether the marine mammal is a dolphin or a porpoise.
She said either a staff member or a volunteer from her organization will be at Demarest Lloyd State Beach today to collect data that could be helpful when it responds to a live stranding of a marine mammal. She added the information it gathers is also helpful for research purposes.
