The new year will be one of challenges for New Bedford, not least for the departure of Kristen Decas, director of both the Harbor Development Commission and Port of New Bedford.
She leaves America's top fishing port at the end of January to become executive director of Oxnard Harbor District, the only deepwater port between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The conclusion of her five-year tenure coincides with the end of Scott Lang's six years as mayor. The two deserve to look at the waterfront with pride, knowing that their leadership helped make it what it is today and what it is still to become.
The director of the port and the commission oversees an annual operational budget of $2.5 million and has responsibility for economic development of the port and oversees the maintenance and improvement of waterfront infrastructure.
