May 20, 2015 — Given the major restrictions placed on groundfishermen in New England to save depleted stocks of cod and other fish, the federal government should not add salt to their wounds. But that is exactly what it is doing: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has told the region’s fleets that later this summer they must begin paying for at-sea monitors to make sure the proper fish and right amount of fish are being caught.
