BREWSTER — Dave Henchy of Brewster was selling tomatoes and broccoli from Concord to local consumers as a community supported agriculture business and he thought about all those fresh fish, lobsters and scallops being off-loaded nearby at Chatham Fish Pier.
The fish are supplied by the fishermen of Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen’s Association and processed by Andy Baler’s Nantucket Fish Company, filleted and packed into one to two-pound portions and delivered directly to the consumer, who prearranged for his/her bi-weekly delivery at a local drop-point.
The fish will be a mix of what the fishermen bring in, cod, haddock, flounder, fresh hake, perhaps tuna and swordfish packed in Styrofoam containers with jell-packs. It can be frozen or thrown right into the pan.
Customers purchase a certain amount (see box) and can buy just finfish or a combo of fish, scallops and lobster. After the six weeks of deliveries there will be four weeks off and then the program starts again.
“Six-months ago we started doing a CSA with vegetables,” Henchy said. “And I asked how could we do this with fish since we live here? I talked to a whole bunch of people for advice.”
