BOSTON – 12 March 2012 – Senators John Kerry and Scott Brown, along with Congressmen William Keating and Michael Capuano, announced that the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will receive a total of $3,107,388 from the U.S. Department of Commerce that will be used for their individual Sea Grant programs.
The Sea Grant program supports research, education, and extension projects that encourage environmental stewardship, long-term economic development, and responsible use of the nation’s coastal and ocean resources throughout Massachusetts.
“This investment boosts cutting edge research and innovation to protect our coastal waters and surrounding environments,” said Sen. Kerry.
“I’m glad that Woods Hole and MIT received these grants to continue their very important research and education projects focused on keeping our oceans clean and protected,” said Sen. Brown
“If there is one vehicle that will help put our economy back on track, it is investments in science and education. In today’s age of economic uncertainty and budget constraints, it seems that even the most common-sense of priorities are not safe from the chopping block. I applaud the Commerce Department for maintaining these priorities and providing WHOI and MIT with this well-deserved funding,” said Rep. Keating.
