January 23, 2014 — Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., is calling on President Barack Obama to step up to the plate and coordinate fish inspections to combat mislabeling and consumer fraud, which hurts both fishermen and their customers.
"Seafood fraud is a serious problem in the United States, with surveys showing some common fish are mislabeled nearly all the time," according to a statement from Markey's office. More than 90 percent of the fish consumed in this country is imported and goes largely uninspected at the borders, the release said.
