PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Sen. Olympia Snowe became known for her statesmanlike demeanor, her independence and behind-the-scenes work to build consensus. She also never backed down from a fight, whether it was scrapping on behalf of New England fishermen, battling for Navy shipbuilder Bath Iron Works or working to save Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Snowe, a moderate Republican who surprised observers this week by announcing she won't seek a fourth term, drew comparisons to the late Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to serve as senator from Maine, for her independent streak and for her willingness to fight for principles.
Snowe served in both chambers of Congress. Snowe also served in both chambers of the Legislature before Congress. Along the way, she never lost an election, and most weren't even close. Until this year, no Republican dared to challenge her in a primary election.
