The Senate paid tribute Thursday to former Senator Ted Stevens, who was a driving force in the institution for decades and joins Edward M. Kennedy and Robert C. Byrd as Senate titans to die in the last year.
Though the chamber was virtually empty due to the summer recess, the Senate passed a resolution commemorating the extraordinary career of the Alaska Republican, who died this week in a plane crash in Alaska, the state he helped shepherd into being and showered with federal money during his 40-year Senate tenure.
Mr. Stevens lost his re-election bid in 2008 after his trial on corruption charges but the case was later thrown out over prosecutorial misconduct. Colleagues said they were relieved that matter had been resolved before his death.
