August 1, 2010 – Support is growing for a bill by Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) that would amend the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and bring some sanity to the federal marine management system.
Nelson introduced the Fishery Conservation Transition Act (FCTA) as S.3594 on July 15 and it has drawn endorsements of support from a coalition of recreational fishing, boating and conservation organizations and sharp criticism from the Pew Environment Group.
"The (FCTA) provides a fair, rational and competent rebuilding of marine fish stocks while avoiding massive, abrupt and unnecessary closures of important recreational saltwater fisheries," said Ellen Peel, president of The Billfish Foundation, one of seven organizations in the coalition.
