President Barack Obama has named a new director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 10 months after the former director died suddenly while skiing.
If confirmed by the Senate, Dan Ashe would replace Sam Hamilton, who died in February after suffering chest pains while skiing in Colorado. Rowan Gould has served as acting director since then.
Ashe, a 15-year veteran at the wildlife agency, has served as deputy director since 2009. He also has served as science adviser, chief of the national wildlife refuge system and assistant director for external affairs. Previously, Ashe was a staff aide for the former House Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries, a precursor to the Natural Resources panel.
