Massachusetts congressmen Barney Frank and John Tierney called Thursday for national oceans chief Jane Lubchenco to resign or be fired over what they described as her "hostility" and lack of accountability toward the American fishing industry.
Frank, whose district includes New Bedford and who, in recent years, has been the most active fishing industry supporter in New England, said he would take his longstanding concerns with Lubchenco's policies and leadership to President Obama. He reiterated his warning that the issue could poison his working relationship with the Obama administration on other key legislative efforts.
Tensions between Frank and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is responsible for regulating fishing in federal ocean waters, have escalated steadily since Lubchenco was tapped to head the agency in early 2009.
