September 26, 2013 — Congresswoman Lois Capps of California announced she will act as the lead sponsor of the Safety and Fraud Enforcement for Seafood Act, or SAFE Seafood Act. The bill was originally filed with Congressman Ed Markey of Massachusetts as lead sponsor. Mr. Markey currently serves in the U.S. Senate, having won a special election to fill the seat vacated by former Senator John Kerry, the current Secretary of State.
On Thursday, Congresswoman Lois Capps announced she will act as the lead sponsor of the Safety and Fraud Enforcement for Seafood Act, or SAFE Seafood Act.
The SAFE Seafood Act is a bill that requires better labeling and safety inspections of seafood sold in the United States.
Capps says the United States imports up to 90% of its seafood, but only 1% is inspected.
