NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — March 11, 2013 — The following was released by the Ocean Explorium
This Wednesday, March 13, the Girls Interested in Real Life Science (GIRLS) speaker series welcomes Carolina Nobre, Research Associate, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to the Ocean Explorium. The series is free and open to the public, thanks to the generous support of the Women's Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts.
Doors will open at 5 PM for a special Science on a Sphere® presentation related to the evening's topic, and for mingling amid the exhibits. The talk begins at 5:30 PM
Middle and high school students – boys and girls – are invited to learn about "a day in the life of an oceanographer" as Ms. Nobre will share with our audience what first attracted her to the field of Oceanography, what academic and professional obstacles she had to overcome, and what challenges she faces in her current position.
Ms. Nobre began studying oceanography at the University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil. She moved to New Bedford in 2007 to pursue her Master's degree at the UMass Dartmouth School of Marine Science and Technology (SMAST). As a Research Associate in Physical Oceanography, Ms. Nobre acquires and processes oceanographic data, allowing her to explore key issues related to our planet, such as climate change and animal habitats.
Attendees are invited to continue the conversation, immediately following the talk, at Brick Pizzeria Napoletana on Union Street. Just for participating in Girls Interested in Real Life Science (GIRLS), guests will enjoy a 20% discount on food and soft drinks!
The Girls Interested in Real Life Science (GIRLS) series runs every Wednesday in March, with the following speakers scheduled:
March 20 – Marya Gabriel, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Assonet Animal Hospital
March 27 – Melissa Walsh and Jessica Chery, PhD Candidates, Brown University
