SOUTH AMBOY, N.J. — August 12, 2012 — The Raritan and Delaware bays in New Jersey are home to heavy petrochemical operations, with the potential for great environmental damage in the event of a spill.
Because of that, a group of volunteers is fanning out along the coast of some of the state's industrialized waterways to document fish, plants and animals that are there now. The data being collected by the American Littoral Society will help form a baseline to compare with the aftermath of a spill.
Stevie Thorsen, who's leading the project, says that could prove critical in assessing damages against the parties responsible for a spill.
