PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — January 17, 2014 — Gov. Maggie Hassan will announce the launch of the Seacoast Science Center's Marine Mammal Rescue Team at next week's Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce Bank of America Breakfast.
The Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye was granted authorization by the National Marine Fisheries Service to lead New Hampshire's marine mammal rescue effort, effective Jan. 1. The Marine Mammal Rescue Team will be dispatched to help to stranded, injured and diseased seals, whales, porpoises and dolphins along New Hampshire's coast. This is the first time a New Hampshire nonprofit has led the effort. A New England Aquarium team based in Quincy, Mass., has been the standing authority since 1978, according to Wendy Lull, president of Seacoast Science Center.
