February 10, 2015 — Boston Harbor, reborn after a 20-year, $4 billion cleanup that was court-ordered in 1985, may become the city’s emergency dump site as the Hub runs out of places to plow seemingly endless piles of snow.
Using the Harbor is “something we might have to consider,” Mayor Martin J. Walsh said yesterday on Boston Herald Radio’s “Morning Meeting” show. “There’s a forecast for more snow coming on Thursday and Friday. At some point, we’re going to run out of space.”
All the state Department of Environmental Protection asks for is a courtesy call and some common sense.
“It’s really an honor system. They don’t even need our approval, they just need to notify us,” DEP spokesman Ed Coletta said. “We’re asking them to use best management practices: If you see large pieces of debris in the snow, try and remove them. Dispose into open water that has adequate flow. If you have a big block of ice out there it can become a navigational hazard.”
