January 29, 2015 — A former lawmaker who once commercially fished out of Gloucester will now head the state’s Department of Fish and Game.
Former Rep. George Peterson’s colleagues on Beacon Hill barely had time to miss him before the Baker administration announced Thursday that the Grafton Republican was returning to state government as the department’s commissioner.
Peterson had served 10 terms in the House before deciding to not run again in 2014.
Fish and Game is responsible for the conservation of the state’s marine fisheries resources. That includes managing both recreational and commercial harvesting of saltwater finfish, shellfish, and crustaceans such as lobster and crab. It also provides boat and canoe access sites, shore fishing areas, and sport fishing piers at more than 250 locations in Massachusetts.
Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Matthew Beaton, who served with Peterson in the House, also appointed Mary-Lee King as deputy commissioner of Fish and Game.
