BOSTON, Mass. — November 4, 2013 — Amid calls from fishermen for better science to measure ocean fish populations and more financial supports for the industry, Sen. Edward Markey on Monday said he would continue to press the Obama administration to bolster the domestic market for dogfish, a small, abundant shark unfamiliar to many restaurant-goers.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren hosted a listening session at the State House Monday, welcoming Alaska Sen. Mark Begich and members of Congress and state Legislature to hear from those in the industry about the financial struggles facing fishermen under reduced federal catch-limits designed to rebuild populations of cod, haddock and other species.
“Fishermen have never been known to give up easily. The perseverance that the Red Sox showed in going from last to world champions is the makeup of all the captains and crew members who make their living from the sea,” Markey said, speaking at the start of the hearing.
