FAIRHAVEN — 12-27-12 – Commercial scalloping can resume in waters off Fairhaven for the first time in about nine years. The scallop beds were closed after the Bouchard oil spill in 2003.
Shellfish Warden Timothy Cox told selectmen Dec. 17 the reopening was delayed by a sewer pipe on the New Bedford side of the harbor that became contaminated.
"It's been awhile since Fairhaven has been productive as far as bay scallops," Mr. Cox said, adding that he wants to keep the resource from being depleted.
