September 24, 2014 — So you want to become a boat captain? This Kennebunk man can show you the ropes – Greg Metcalf has been navigating the seas for the majority of his life and now he now teaches others what he has learned.
Capt. Metcalf first set foot on a boat as a child, fishing the coastal waters throughout New England with his family, and he hasn’t looked back since.
“My first summer job working on the water was at age 17, as a mate aboard a charter boat in Galilee, Rhode Island. That is where I was introduced to and learned the skills of operating larger sport fishing crafts and fishing for offshore species like marlin and tuna. I worked my way through college working as a mate aboard private sport fishing yachts – fishing in tuna and billfish tournaments from Montauk, New York, to Portland, Maine, during my summer vacations,” he said.
After graduating from college, Metcalf began running private yachts and participating in big game fishing tournaments. In 1983, Metcalf earned his U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s license and in 1984 he started a fishing tackle manufacturing business – in addition to operating yachts and sport fishing.
“For the next 25 years I designed, manufactured and marketed fishing tackle, fished and spent as much time on the water as possible,” he said.
