November 1, 2014 — In the wake of unexpected, draconian cuts to Gulf of Maine cod catch limits, Emily Rooney, of WGBH News’ Greater Boston Show, sits down with Northeast Seafood Coalition Advisor and Gloucester Fishing Community Preservation Fund board member Vito Giacalone to discuss the toll that these regulations are taking on the Massachusetts fishing community.
These new measures, which effectively shut down the Gulf of Maine cod fishery for at least 6 months, will not only put many fishermen out of business, but according to Mr. Giacalone, were hastily assembled with little public involvement and limited survey data. WGBH News’ Greater Boston Show also spoke with commercial fishermen and distributors working along Boston’s fish pier.
