June 24, 2014 — It's almost time to break out your mask and snorkel! Governor Rick Scott asked the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) to open the 2014 scallop season early to help provide an economic boost to the coastal communities from the Pasco-Hernando county line north and west to the west bank of Mexico Beach Canal in Bay County.
The season will open June 28, three days earlier than it was originally slated to start, and will run through September 24. All bag and size limits will remain the same: 2 gallons of whole scallops or 1 pint of shucked scallops per person, per day and a vessel limit of 10 gallons of whole scallops or 1/2 gallon of shucked scallops. They can be harvested using a dip net or by hand.
