April 10, 2015 — Legislation that would again allow fishing with nets on the Tennessee River and its tributaries has cleared the Alabama House and now moves on to the Senate.
House Bill 258 would allow commercial fishermen to return to the waterways, said sponsor Rep. Lynn Greer, R-Rogersville.
“It’s an industry that we have that doesn’t cost us anything,” Greer said earlier this week. His bill was approved by the House on an 80-16 vote.
The ban is decades old but wasn’t enforced by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources until late in 2012.
The nets were used by commercial fishermen to catch large amounts of fish, including catfish and buffalo fish, by blocking a section of a stream or waterway.
