Former Sen. George LeMieux had his feet on the ground and his ears open to the concerns of Destin’s business owners, real estate agents and fishermen last week as part of his 2012 U.S. Senate campaign.
“It’s the same concerns I heard when I was in the U.S. Senate,” LeMieux told The Log. “The marine fisheries folks in Washington are imposing standards on our fishermen that have no scientific basis, they are not following the Magnuson-Stevens law, and the result is that folks who used to fish 250 to 300 days a year are now fishing 125 days because these limits on red snapper are ridiculous and not scientifically based.”
“It’s hurting our family fishermen,” he added.
LeMieux, who joins a jam-packed list of candidates attempting to unseat incumbent Bill Nelson, is no stranger to the U.S. Senate, having served 16 months in office after Mel Martinez retired during his term in 2010.
Since his prior term in the senate, LeMieux told The Log he has championed the issue of fishing regulations on red snapper and grouper.
