It is not time for the federal government to abandon the regulation of commercial fishing.
But the most recent report on the status of wild fish stocks ought to prompt federal officials to begin relaxing those regulations.
The 2008 Status of the Fisheries Report of the National Marine Fisheries Service shows four species now out of danger of being overfished. They include the northern and southern stocks of monkfish, Atlantic bluefish and the Gulf of Mexico king mackerel.
