WGBH Greater Boston: May 12, 2010 – Uproar over federal fishing restrictions.
New federal restrictions on commercial fishing in the Northeast went into effect on May 1st, requiring increased monitoring and limiting the catch commercial fishermen can take on cod, haddock, and other local ocean fish. The cities of Gloucester and New Bedford are challenging the regulations, saying the new rules will result in hundreds of small-scale fishing operators being put out of business and kill the on-shore businesses that support them.
