Bristol Community College is offering two free classes as part of a three-course program to train dockside and at-sea groundfish catch monitors to meet the demand for regulators as a result of changes to groundfish catch regulations.
Representatives from the National Marine Fisheries Service, Northeast Fisheries Science Center and BCC will be available to answer questions about the program at a free informational session this Thursday, December 9, at the BCC New Bedford Campus, 188 Union St.
The two free four-credit classes, Fisheries Technologies and Monitoring Techniques and Marine Biology begin the week of January 1 on the New Bedford Campus. A third one-credit class, Marine Safety, will be held on one Saturday and one Sunday in the spring on the Fall River Campus.
To be eligible, candidates must be high school graduates and pass a math placement exam in algebra and geometry and be able to meet physical requirements including the ability to lift 50 pounds and swim 100 yards. Additional training through the National Marine Fisheries Service is required for certification.
