The New England Fishery Management Council has begun soliciting advice from fishermen before making a series of what members admit will be "brutal" decisions next month certain to radically alter the industry and leave a trail of winners and losers.
The not so merry-go-round of advice began here earlier this week, and has continued at other meetings around New England, the last one set for Monday in South Kingstown, R.I.
At the meeting here, every one of the more than two dozen fishermen who traveled from as far as Martha’s Vineyard to comment to the council about how to divide up the catchable stock made clear they’d prefer not be made losers.
