August 22, 2014 — An Oakland husband and wife have been convicted of using a speedboat with hidden compartments to poach more than 100 Dungeness crabs off the San Mateo County coast.
Minh Tran, 54, and his wife, Mai Tran, 52, pleaded no contest Wednesday in San Mateo County Superior Court to taking more than three times the crab limit and illegally taking crabs for profit, both misdemeanors. Their boat will probably be destroyed because of the secret compartments, said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Minh Tran, who has a record of infractions and misdemeanor convictions for state Fish and Game Code violations, was sentenced to 10 days in jail, three years of probation and a $20,580 fine. His wife was sentenced to five days in jail and two years of probation.
