Unveiling the Global Partnership for Oceans, World Bank president Robert Zoellick warned only coordinated international action can rescue 70 percent of the world's surface from over-fishing, marine degradation and climate change.
"The world's oceans are in danger and the enormity of the challenge is bigger than one country or organization. We need a new SOS: Save Our Seas, " Mr Zoellick told delegates at the inaugural World Oceans Summit.
The new alliance will bring together governments, scientific centers, NGOs, global corporations, foundations and the private sector – and seek to raise a war chest of $1.5 billion (£1 billion) to be spent over the next five years to protect the seas, Mr Zoellick said.
