SEAFOODNEWS.COM by John Sackton — October 1, 2014 — Poj Aramwattananont, president of the Thai Frozen Foods Association, speaking to the Nation Newspaper, said Thai shrimp still faced problems over Early Mortality Syndrome, which had caused a decline in output from last year's level to about 200,000 tons this year. In 2013, Thailand produced about 250,000 tons of finished products.
He said that processing plants would need to import shrimp from India, Vietnam, or Ecuador in order to avoid disruptions in the 4th quarter.
He estimated that around 40,000 tons would have to be imported.
He also said that overall prices were up to 30% lower than last year, and that Thailand was seeing fewer orders due to their production woes.
